Are we on the radar?

Martin Weber feels that microISV’s are not on the radar of development tools companies. He looks primarily at Microsoft’s soon to be released Visual Studio Team System and writes the following:

While enterprise editions are often targeted at (larger) teams of developers they strip off too many features of professional editions to be suitable for a MicroISV.

I agree with that statement if what you’re looking for is an all inclusive solution, but there are plenty of companies out there that provide the microISV with free or inexpensive solutions that are fully integrated into Visual Studio. Eric Sink’s company, SourceGear, is a perfect example with his Vault source control product (free for one user) and Dragnet bug tracking software (ballpark price of $99/$129).

Microsoft is definitely not overlooking the microISV either. Jeff Sandquist recently hired an evangelist who will be working with the microISV community. We should be seeing more microISV related information coming out of Redmond in the near future.

Well, I can’t say much about integration with Visual Studio, but there are projects/products out there with the MicroISV in mind… I’m having a go at being a MicroISV with my project, Tesly (http://www.tesly.com/), a development and testing tool with a price structure friendly to small teams (free), medium teams (cheap), and large teams (somewhat pricey).

Brian at MicroISV.com noticed my post about MicroISV not beeing on the radar of many tool vendors. My take on Visual Studio Team System is due to my reaction on Eric Sink’s post about it’s pricing. Generally I am not centered around MS offerings and …

Microsoft is a Gold sponsor at this year’s Shareware Industry Conference http://www.sic.org In talking with Jeff he has expressed an interest in finding out what MS can do to help small developers, he has assured me that Microsoft is committed to small developers. I have a phone conference with him next week about SIC I’ll let you know how it goes :-)

Can I offer a quick clarification? You didn’t mention it, but SourceGear also provides Dragnet with the same licensing arrangement as Vault - a free Single named license.

So, all in all, a single user can get started with Vault (Source Code Control) and Dragnet (Bug Tracking) and using MSDE 2000, also available as a download from SourceGear’s site.

The biggest investment/cost here will be the time required to setup / learn the tools. [Aside]Oh, I should also mention they’ll probably need to provide their own hardware :>)[/Aside]

Hope this clears up any confusion.

Thanks Jeff, I appreciate the clarification. That’s even better news for the microISV community.
